A yellow fever vaccine is essential for trips to many parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Some countries also ask to see a yellow fever certificate at the border, even if you are only passing through. So, check the entry rules for every country on your route before you book.
About yellow fever
Yellow fever is a virus that certain mosquitoes carry. These mosquitoes bite mainly during the day. Most infected people get a short illness and then recover. However, around 1 in 7 go on to a more severe stage, which can damage the liver and kidneys and can be fatal.
Symptoms
- Sudden fever and headache
- Aching muscles and backache
- Feeling or being sick
- In the severe stage, yellow skin, dark urine, stomach pain and bleeding
Your yellow fever vaccine
The vaccine is called Stamaril, and you need only 1 injection. For most people, a single dose protects for life, so you will not usually need a booster. Have it at least 10 days before you arrive, as that is when protection starts and when the certificate becomes valid.
Because it is a live vaccine, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, your pharmacist will take extra care if you are over 60, pregnant or have a weakened immune system. They will go through a short health check with you first.
Stopping mosquito bites
- Use a repellent with DEET or picaridin, day and evening
- Cover your arms and legs
- Sleep under a treated net if your room is not screened
